Artist Statement
Initially inspired by traditional needlework my work gravitates towards abstraction, using contemporary free motion embroidery which is subsequently moulded into three dimensional forms.
The concept of ‘Harmony’ has been to explore new paths while maintaining the delicateness of the natural world, the sculptures convey a sense of balance, a visual journey representing strength, fragility, delicacy and lightness, the focus on texture and detail invites the viewer to engage and observe at close range.
The natural environment has always been a source of inspiration, however with ‘Harmony’ I wanted a diversion from my usual influences and integrated simple geometric shapes with a complex 3D form. I have had fun playing with colour, texture and light and also experimenting with different presentations e.g. perspex on textured boards add a more intricate depth to the pieces with shadows changing how the depth of the artwork is perceived based on the direction of light sources.
